In the days before “Hamburger Helper” this is a dish that my Great Grandmother Stillwagon used to make when she lived with my mom that she used to LOVE!
1 – 1 1/2 pounds of Ground beef (at least 20% lean)
1 onion (small) chopped fine
1 small green pepper, diced
2 or 3 large potatoes, diced
1 16 oz. Can diced tomatoes “Optional”
1/2 tsp. Salt
1/4 tsp. Pepper
1 1/2 cup water (or enough water to cover potatoes)
2-4 beef bouillon cubes
1 tsp. Minced garlic from jar; ¼ tsp. Italian seasonings; two bay leaves
2-tblsp cornstarch blended with water, used to thicken gravy (This is only a guess at the amount of cornstarch, you will learn how much to use.)
Brown ground beef in skillet. Add onion and green pepper sauté until onions are clear. Add potatoes, tomatoes, water, salt, pepper, garlic, seasonings, bay and bouillon cubes. Cover, and cook till potatoes are tender. Thicken gravy with cornstarch mixture reaches desired thickness.
